Posted: November 30th, 2009 | Filed under: Fun Flower Information | Comments Off

There are a huge variety of beautiful and unique flowers in the world its a shame that so many people always turn to the old mainstays such as roses, carnations and lilies. For those with more creative ideas, its possible to create unusual floral designs that are truly unique. Whether youre giving a floral gift or decorating for some special occasion, taking advantage of some of the more exotic flowers can add a special flair.

One easy way to differentiate a floral design is to experiment with different colors. When it comes to gifts or decorations, you commonly see colors like reds, whites, pinks and various pastel colors. Try experimenting with different colors like bright purples, greens or even gold and bronze hues. Thats not to suggest you should just randomly throw together different colors haphazard floral designs are not the same things as unusual floral designs.

The other obvious choice is to differentiate which flowers that you use in your arrangements. Avoid the common flowers like roses. A good rule of thumb might be to look down a list of flowers, and only consider the ones youve never heard of before. While the commonly used flowers have a well-deserved reputation for beauty, many other uncommonly seen blossoms possess an unexplored beauty. It may take awhile to find all the different flowers you need for unusual floral designs, but a nice side effect of this is that youll learn a lot, too.

The number of different types of plants that exist in the world is simply staggering. When it comes to flowers, almost everyone is familiar with the more commonly seen species, such as roses, dandelions, and lilies. But what about the more unique flowers out there? Theres a wide range of different ones to explore some beautiful and exotic, and others quite the opposite.

Particular blossoms are most notable for the shape that theyre petals take. Take for example the grape hyacinth. Many people are familiar with the flowery stalks of the standard hyacinth plant. The grape hyacinth is quite different the common variety. Whereas the petals on most hyacinths spread outward, on a grape hyacinth they spread inward. These unique flowers end up looking like grapes on a stem since the petals fold in to form small circular shapes.

Another interesting variation on a fairly common flower is the bee orchid. While they share the same basic structure as your everyday orchid, bee orchids have a unique color pattern that resembles a female bee. The purpose of this is to attract male bees so that they will then pollinate other flowers. Bee orchids have a distinctive look you might not call it beautiful, but these flowers are certainly fascinating.

There are literally hundreds of other unique flowers out there, especially if you look at sources outside your immediate area. Some of the flowers that grow in the wilds of Africa or in rainforests will really blow your mind!

Types of Annual Flowers

Posted: November 26th, 2009 | Filed under: Fun Flower Information | Comments Off

Planting a flower garden can be tough and confusing work. Fortunately, there are few things more rewarding than a beautiful garden. However, if you want to try your hand at gardening, you need to understand some important concepts about flowers. For example, you need to understand the difference between annuals and perennials. You should also learn about the different types of annual flowers, as well as the various perennials.

An annual flower is one that only grows once before it dies off and must be replanted. Perennials, on the other hand, will last for several seasons before they need to be renewed. Keep in mind though that both types of plants dont last terribly long. While you dont have to replant perennials year to year, they still die quickly. In addition, perennials dont always bloom in the first year. You should pay attention to when each flower is intended to grow, as many types of annual flowers grow and die within just a few weeks. If you dont plan it carefully, your garden might be half-full of dead plants before others even start to grow.

There are some other variations on these broad categories. For instance, there are certain flowers called half hearty annuals. These plants are perennials that can be grown as annuals in harsher, colder climates. As you can see, there are a few different types of annual flowers and perennial flowers that need to be researched before you start planting.
